New Superintendent

(February 21, 2023) – Dr. Scott Worner was appointed as the next superintendent of Mecklenburg County Public Schools following Mr. Paul Nichols’ retirement on June 30, 2023. This announcement was made at the February 20th school board meeting. Mr. Nichols has served as the school division’s chief during the past eight years and has created a culture and legacy that has been highlighted with the planning and building of a state-of-the-art high school/middle school complex, development of career academies, and the support of the community and the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors to remodel and/or rebuild the remaining three pre-1970 elementary schools. Mr. Nichols leadership has greatly enhanced the educational opportunities and experiences of Mecklenburg students, staff, and the community.

Residing in Boydton and a resident of Mecklenburg County for nearly 25 years, Dr. Worner currently serves as Assistant Superintendent of Mecklenburg County Public Schools. Over his 46 year career, his previous experiences include: Assistant Superintendent (Charlotte, Dinwiddie, and Spotsylvania counties); Director of Secondary Education and Acting Director of Finance (Halifax County), CEO/Executive Director of the Mecklenburg County YMCA; Director of Maintenance/School Construction and Director of Transportation (Spotsylvania County); Principal (Altavista Middle/High School, Chancellor Middle/High School, Jefferson Elementary School, Broadway High School, and Post Oak Middle School); Associate Principal (Surry County Middle/High School); Assistant Principal (Alleghany High School, Christiansburg High School, Park View Middle School, and Bluestone High School); Athletic Director (Alleghany High School and Spotsylvania County); Teacher (Broadway High School, Rappahannock High School, Richmond County Intermediate School, and Richmond County Elementary School); School Bus Driver (Rockingham County) and stints working as an adjunct instructor for Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Tech.

Dr. Worner earned his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech (School Administration and Supervision), his Masters of Education (School Administration and Supervision) from James Madison University and his Bachelor of Science (Art Education and Sports Medicine) from James Madison University.

He is married to Nancy Hundley Worner a retired special education teacher, who is a Mecklenburg County native. They have two children, Hillary Adams Elder, and John Hundley Adams. They also have four grandchildren: Adam, Heath, Liam, and Violet.
