Title I is a federally funded program that helps schools provide assistance to students who may need additional help in meeting success at school. All four elementary schools are Title I schools.
The Title I school wide program is designed to assist all students as they learn to read and solve mathematical problems. Title I teachers are trained as specialists in reading and mathematics. While all students benefit from the school wide model, some students may receive additional services from the Title I specialist.
Title I:
provides additional instruction to help eligible students improve reading, writing or math skills in kindergarten through fifth grade
coordinates all instructional activities with the classroom or subject area teacher to foster more effective learning
provides a variety of instructional approaches and materials that complement the county’s language arts and mathematics curricula
provides individual and small group supplemental instruction
promotes self-esteem to help children reach their full potential
encourages parent and family involvement through parent conferences, math/literacy night events, and workshops.
Parent involvement at all grade levels is key in all Title I schools. In addition to holding an annual meeting, Title I schools offer these opportunities:
invite and welcome parents as active participants in student learning and school activities
provide opportunities for parents to gain greater insight into children’s educational, social and emotional needs through meetings and workshops
give parents a voice in Title I efforts at their child’s school
The Title II program for MCPS provides funding for staff development. Each school receives funds for professional development for teachers and professional conferences designed to improve instruction and increase student achievement.
The Title III program provides services for English learners who need intensive instruction to develop English proficiency. Program funding supports tutoring, parent involvement workshops, and instructional materials.
